Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, is performed to address abdominal fat and excessive skin sagging. It is preferred for patients who cannot lose weight and achieve skin tightening despite exercise and diet. During the tummy tuck surgery, abdominal muscles loosened due to childbirth or aging are tightened. The navel is corrected, excess fat tissue is removed, and sagging skin tissue is excised to make the abdomen flat and firm. If the problem in the abdominal area is both above and below the navel, the procedure is called a “full tummy tuck.” If the problem is only below the navel, it is called a “mini tummy tuck.” Liposuction can be performed in the waist and stomach areas if there is fat accumulation. The incision from the tummy tuck surgery is placed to remain within the underwear or bikini line.
Regarding childbirth, a tummy tuck surgery can be comfortably performed one year after childbirth. After having a tummy tuck, you can easily give birth 18-24 months later. The tummy tuck surgery does not hinder the baby’s development. It is performed under general anesthesia.
Full abdominoplasty
The incision is made from one hip to the other, but it can be hidden within a bikini line. Loose muscles and fascia in the lower, middle, and upper abdominal wall are repaired to eliminate bulging. Excess skin and fat layers are pulled downward and removed. The belly button is repositioned. Liposuction may also be used additionally to contour and provide a smoother shape. Depending on the extent of the full abdominoplasty procedure, it can take 2-4 hours.
“Mini abdominoplasty”
A smaller incision is made between both groins. Loose muscles and fascia in the lower abdominal wall are repaired to eliminate bulging. The skin is pulled downward, and excess skin and fat layers are removed. The position of the belly button may not be changed. Liposuction is often used to smooth out the transition area. The surgery time for a mini abdominoplasty is typically between 1-2 hours.
The recovery process after abdominoplasty operation
After the operation, dressing changes are done, and a special abdominal binder is worn to minimize swelling and support the abdomen. In the first few days, there may be swelling and discomfort in the abdominal area, which is managed with pain relievers. Drains are typically removed within 1-3 days. You stay in the hospital for approximately 1-3 days. You can return to work 2-4 weeks later.
The scar will appear red-pinkish in color for the first 3-6 months, and it may take 9 months to 1 year for the scars to flatten and fade. The scar is placed so that it can be concealed under a bikini. From the third week onwards, you will better notice the new shape that the abdominoplasty has given your body. Confidence in your appearance typically increases after abdominoplasty surgery.
